About Your Visit

Comprehensive Pediatric Dental Services

First Visit to a Dentist

A referral from another dentist or a physician is not required to schedule an appointment for your child in our office.

New Patients

We gladly take new pediatric patients in our office. Typically, we accept new patients that are 6 years of age and under.

Referrals

If your child is referred by a dentist or physician, it means they need specialized care, whether for behavior issues, extensive treatment, or a second opinion. We’re here to help.

Emergencies

What is a dental emergency?  A dental emergency can be a toothache or swelling in the mouth as a result of a deep cavity, dental fracture or infection.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

Specialized Training

Pediatric dentists undergo specialized training focused on the dental needs of children from birth to young adulthood.

Educational Requirements

Similar to general dentists, pediatric dentists complete a four-year dental program at an accredited dental school.

Residency Program

After dental school, pediatric dentists enter a competitive two-year residency program, providing intensive training across all age groups, including newborns, infants/toddlers, children, teens, and those with special needs.

Focus on Growth and Development

Pediatric dentists limit their practice to specialized dental care, ensuring proper growth and development of children’s oral health while establishing lifelong oral hygiene habits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

At what age should my child first see the dentist?

We follow the guidelines from the American Dental Association and recommend a child have their first dental exam either 6 months after their first tooth comes in -or- by their first birthday – whichever comes first.  Early first visits allow our dentists to perform a dental exam and cleaning, introduce the patient to a friendly dental office, check for any potential dental or developmental issues and discuss important issues with the parents concerning oral hygiene instructions, diet, and development of the teeth/oral structures.

What should I bring to my child’s first dental appointment?

A parent or legal guardian will be required to be present at an initial dental appointment in our office to provide a detailed medical history for the child including any allergies to medications (penicillin, amoxicillin, etc.) or environmental factors (food allergies, latex, etc.), any current medications your child may be taking, dental and medical insurance information, the name of your child’s physician, and any previous surgeries or hospitalizations that your child has experienced in the past.

How should I prepare my child for their first dental appointment?

As a parent or legal guardian, you can help make your child’s first dental appointment fun and enjoyable.  You can assure your child that you will remain with them throughout the entire appointment.  You can help us do our job better by explaining to your child that a dentist is someone who helps make sure they have healthy teeth and a nice smile.  It is important not to convey any of your own fears/phobias of dentistry to your child as this has been shown to create anxiety and fear in children who have not yet even seen a dentist.  Remember, it is our goal to make this a positive experience for everyone.

What dental insurances do you take?

It is actually easier to list the dental insurance that we do not accept in our office: MCNA. Please call our office if you have a question about your specific dental insurance.
