A pediatric dentist has specialized training that is focused on the dental needs of children from birth to young adulthood.  A pediatric dentist is similar to a general dentist in that both are required to complete a four-year dental program at an accredited dental school. 

To become a pediatric dentist, a dentist must then apply for and be accepted into a highly competitive two-year residency program that provides the intensive training required to be considered a specialist.  This residency program includes dental care for newborns, infants/toddlers, children, teens and those with special needs.
